Visit Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam

The Thien Mu Pagoda just outside Hue was a hotbed of anti-government protest during the early 1960's. The Thien Mu Pagoda is one of the must see Tourist sight in Hue and is home to the Austin motorcar made famous by Thich Quang Duc's self immolation in 1963.

Surprisingly, it also became a focus of protest in the 1980s when someone was murdered near the Pagoda and anti-communist demonstration was started right here in Thien Mu Pagoda , closing traffic around Phu Xuan Bridge. Monks were arrested and accused of disturbing the traffic and public order. Things have calmed down and a small group of monks, novices and nuns now live at Pagoda.

Self immolation of monk Thich Quang Duc

Thich Quang Duc travelled to Ho Chi Minh City and publicly burned himself to death to protest the polocies of President Ngo Dinh Diem. A famous photograph of his act was printed on the front page of newspapers all around the world. Thich Quang Duc's death soon inspired a numbers of others self-immolation.

Many westerners were shocked less by the suicides than by reaction of Tran Le Xuan, known as Madame Nhu, the President's notorious sister in law, who happily proclaimed the self-immolations a 'barbecue party' and have said, Let them burn and we shall clap our hands. Her statements greatly added to the already substantial public disgust with  Diem's regim; the US press labelled Madame Nhu the ' Iron Butterfly ' and ' Dragon Lady ' . In November, both President Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu (Madame Nhu's husband) were assassinated by Diem's own military. Madame Nhu was out side the Vietnam at the time.

A number of Hoi An's wooden building dates from the first part of the 19th century or earlier, giving visitors who have just a bit of imagination the feeling that they have been transported back a couple of centuries to a time when the wharf was crowded with sailing ships, the streets of Hoi An teemed with porters transporting goods to and from warehouses and trades from a dozen countries haggled in a babble of different languages.
todo-travel.com
Because Hoi An was relatively untouched by the American war, it almost serves as a museum piece of Vietnamese history. At this time, over 800 structures of historical significance have been officially identified in Hoi An
 Ancient Town

Hoi An Architecture can be categorized into 9 types

  1. Houses and Shops
  2. Wells
  3. Family Chapels for ancestor worship
  4. Pagodas
  5. Vietnamese and Chinese temples
  6. Bridges
  7. Communal Buildings
  8. Assembly halls of various Chinese Congregations
  9. Various tombs belonging to Various Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese
Many of Hai An's Older Structures exhibit features of traditional architecture rarely seen today in Vietnam. As they have for centuries, some shopfronts which are open during the day to display theitr wares are shuttered at night by the shopkeeper inserting horizontal planks into grooves cut into the columns that support the roof. Some of the building's roof are made up of thousands of brick-colored yin and yang roof tiles - so called because of the way the alternating rows of concave and convex tiles fit snugly together.

During the rainy season, the lichens and moss that live on the tiles spring to life, turning entire rooftops bright green.
 Ancient Town

Many of Hoi An's houses have round pieces of wood with an am and Duong symbol in the middle surrounded by a spiral design over the doorway. These watchful eyes are supposed to protect the residents of the house from coming to any harm,

Hoi An's Historic structures are gradually being restored and there is a sincere effort being made to preserve the unique character of the city, the local government has put some thought into this - Old Houses of Hoi An must be licensed for restoration work and it must be done in the tasteful manner. The Government certify the historical significance of building - at present, there are four categories.

Hoi An Guided Tours

Many of the house owners in Hoi An Ancient town also charge for the invasion of their privacy as much as US$3 for a guided tour of the building - but this is negotiable, If you are on Vietnam Tours then you will not need to pay this extra fee as your Guide can organize it.

Two legends explains the origins of West Lake, Or Ho Tay in Vietnamese, the West lake is also known as the Lake of Mist and the Big Lake. According to one West lake was created when the Dragon king drowned an evil nine-tailed fox in his lair, which was in a forest on this site, the Other legend relates that in the 11th century, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Khong Lo, rendered a great service to the emperor of China, who rewarded him with a vast quantity of bronze from which he cast a huge bell. The sound of the bell could be heard all the way to China, where the Golden buffalo Calf, mistaking the ringing for it's mother's call, ran southward, trampling on the site of Ho Tay and turning it into a lake.

In reality, the West lake was created when the Red River Overflowed its banks, Indeed, the Red River has changed its course numerous times, alternately flooding some areas and causing slip build up which creates new land. The flood problem has been partially controlled by building dikes, The highway along the east side of the west lake is built atop such a dike.

The west lake was once ringed with magnificent palaces and pavilions, These were destroyed in the course of various feudal wars. The circumference of west lake is about 13 KM.

The Tran Quoc Pagoda is on the shore of West lake off Pho Thanh Nien, Which divides West Lake from Truc Bach Lake . A stele here dating from 1639 tells the history of this site. The Pagoda was rebuilt in the 15th century and again in 1842. There are a numbers of monks funerary monuments in the garden. This is one of the oldest Pagodas in all Vietnam and most of the Vietnam Package Tours  companies include them to the tour program in Hanoi. Tonkin Visa (VisaVietnam.Pro) has day tour to Tran Quoc Pagoda

On the south side of the West lake is a popular strip of outdoors sea-foods restaurants which the north side has been ear-marked for the developments of luxurious villas and Hotels.
